ASU celebrates Earth Day

In honor of Earth Day, SGA and the EVS graduate class have teamed up for a "Go Green" campaign at ASU.

At 1 p.m., a press conference will be held to begin the campaign for ASU to start recycling plastic.

In a press release, Sheri Walls said the Environmental Sciences classes were divided into groups. Each group was given assignments. They were to identify where recycling bins would be helpful, research the types of plastic that could be recycled, and note specific instructions.

Due to budget issues, bins were not able to be purchased. So the students got donations from private businesses to help pay for the bins.

The initiative calls for 20 recycling bins on campus this year, and 20 more will be added to the campus at a later date.

At the press conference, Dan Howard, vice-chancellor for academic affairs, will speak, as well as Ryan Beaird, SGA president.

Howard participated in the first Earth Day in 1970 when he was a student at Manhattan College in New York.

According to the press release, he said "the 1970 event had a strong buy-in by the campus community in which many positive projects were spun off."

Beaird said he was glad that SGA was taking the initiative to get this project going and to make a greener ASU.
