Secretary Hillary Colvard addresses the SGA Tuesday

A proposed resolution presented Tuesday night before the Student Government Association could have serious implications for social networking students.

The resolution, which was presented by Senior Sen. Ikemba Balogu and SGA Chief of Staff John-Scott Carroll, would remove access to Facebook, MySpace and YouTube on all computers on the second through fifth floors of the Dean B. Ellis Library starting seven days before finals and through the seven days of finals. It would affect both fall and spring terms.

Students would still be able to access these Web sites in the first floor computer lab.

The resolution was proposed to help prevent non-academic use of library computer terminals during the most important academic week of each semester.

The resolution will be voted on during the next meeting Nov. 11. Kyle Fulton, public relations director, said if approved by SGA, the resolution would have to also be approved by university officials and Information and Technology Services. It would begin this semester.

In other business, SGA approved a resolution presented by Junior Sen. Kiel Smith that would amend the constitution to require the vice president to have previously served on SGA for at least two semesters.

The constitution currently allows freshmen with no experience to run for the position and be elected.

The amendment will next go before the student body, with the approval of at least two-thirds of the student body needed for the amendment to take effect. Fulton said the election would be soon, though a date has not been set.

SGA also discussed a "Home for the Holidays" initiative, which would have the majority of SGA members traveling to their hometowns with packets and recruiting supplies to advertise for ASU.
