The Colleges Against Cancer are circulating petitions around campus collecting signatures to present to the SGA in hopes of making ASU smoke-free.

More than 20 petitions are circulating campus to make ASU a smoke-free campus. Views on the petitions are mixed, and what really does a smoke-free campus mean?

Aside from the known health risks, a recent Centers for Disease Control study reported smoking-related illnesses cost the nation more than $157 billion annually.

Colleges Against Cancer President Kyle Fulton said CAC is suggesting to SGA that smoking be moved to parking lots. It will not affect the fraternity houses or faculty, staff or married housing, Fulton said.

The Convocation Center and inside the other athletic facilities are already smoke-free, as well as campus dorms.

Fulton said students are currently collecting signatures, and the organization has received a lot of feedback on the petitions.

"I have 600 signatures, but most of the petitions are still out with people. I have had a lot of complaints, but even more happy people," Fulton said.

When 600 signatures are collected, the petitions will be presented to the SGA.
