The ASU Marching Band has a new title. The former "Marching Indians" are now known as "The Sound of the Natural State."
"The nickname for the band was developed to assist in branding and public relations, with emphasis on the numerous times the organization represents the institution and the state at marching band exhibitions and off-campus performances.
The name is designed to set the organization apart from all other "State University Marching Bands."
"The only thing new presently on the band uniform is the "STATE" sash added to cover up the Indian logo on the present uniform," Dr. Kenneth Carroll, director of the A-State Marching Band, said. "The music department cannot currently afford the large expense of new uniforms to reflect the change in mascot, so the "STATE" sash was designed and added to facilitate public performance until such time as funds are made available."
Carroll said, "I am unsure as to the amount of the sashes, as the money was provided from the dean of the college of fine arts, which in turn was solicited directly from the Office of the Chancellor."
According to the ASU Bands Web site, The A-State marching band provides nearly 200 students with opportunities to continue their musical activities and growth.
The performances of the A-State Marching Band are new performances each year, offering shows in a modified drum-corps style.
"The Sound of the Natural State" has provided music and support for ASU athletic events with appearances at all home football games. The marching band also performs at pep rallies and has a pep band that travels with the men and women's basketball teams.
