Letter to the editor

Abstract:
I would like to pick up and expand on a line in an editorial in The Herald several weeks ago about parking issues, when the author[s] noted that pedestrians also need to act responsibly. This is especially true, I submit, in an area, which will quite possibly see a tragedy in the future, unless something changes....

Get off your high horse just because people don't follow sidewalks like they're trains following tracks. You'd be taking shortcuts too if you were carrying ~60lbs of books across campus and you were in a hurry.

Pedestrians have the right of way. May I remind you they're not in a cocoon of metal and glass like people driving cars are. Drivers need to realize this and start being a little more accommodating.

Pedestrians need to be cautious and follow laws, but they do have right of way and it is the job of drivers to be aware of them.

Part of the problem could be the number of cars usually parked at the Post Office.

If I check my mail during the day, I've frequently noticed the parking lot is almost (if not completely) full. Guess how many people are actually IN the office? Maybe two or three. That parking lot is designated for customers. It is really frustrating to need a parking spot and not be able to get one, which of course adds to the danger of that area.

Maybe a surveillance camera would help decrease the number of people who don't belong in that parking lot? I do agree that something needs to happen. I have started checking my mail at night and avoiding that area as much as possible just because it is such a headache.

Now that Caraway is the only access to Johnson with a stoplight, the traffic really has gotten ridiculous. Something needs to be done.
