When I picked up today's Herald I was glad to see an article about the Oscars. As a movie lover this year's Oscars had me very excited, what with the expansion of the best picture category and so many great nominees (of which I saw 8/10). Reading the article I found several worthwhile points mentioned. But I feel that two of the most important parts of the Oscars were not mentioned at all. First, something I feel is very important and very timely what with this being Women's History Month, is the fact that Kathryn Bigelow, director for the Best Picture winner "The Hurt Locker" is the first woman to win Best Director in the history of the award's show. The first! One woman on the very short list to even be nominated. Another very important first was the win by Geoffrey Fletcher for Best Adapted Screenplay for "Precious;" Fletcher is the first black American to win an Oscar for screenwriting. This year's Oscars had more going on than awkward jokes by the dual hosts and interrupting producers and I felt that those should have been highlighted as well.
