The 17th annual Order of the Pack kicked off the 2013 Red Wolf football season with two big reveals: an addition to the Red Wolf family and the theme for this year's homecoming.
Liberty Bank Stadium was full of screaming students and fans Thursday night ready to cheer on the Red Wolves. The University had a big surprise for the fans in the form of a new mascot to join the Red Wolves nationally ranked mascot, "Howl." After a short video showing "Howl" desperately searching for a companion on the Internet, and getting fed up with being alone, ASU's newest member of the pack, "Scarlet," joined "Howl" on the field to resounding applause.
"Scarlet" is the female version of "Howl" and comes with her own peppy, radiant personality.
This year's homecoming theme, "Ignite the Tradition," was also revealed, along with the adopted motto for the season, "#packpride." The video for the homecoming theme featured pictures from different decades in ASU's history, dating back to the 1910s.
Both Head Coach Bryan Harsin and Athletic Director Terry Mohajir were fired up for the start of the the football season, and emphasized their appreciation for the support ASU and the city of Jonesboro has shown to the athletic programs. Harsin encouraged everyone to show up to Saturday's game with energy and enthusiasm, and to be ready to cheer the Red Wolves to victory.
"This is awesome to see everyone out here. This is exactly what we want Saturday night... To have this entire place filled so we can protect the vault and have another opportunity at a championship and win every game we play in right here at home," Harsin said.
Saturday's season opener will be against the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions. This will be the first meeting between the two teams, and also the first game under Harsin's leadership.
Kick-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday at Liberty Bank Stadium.
