The first A-State Up ‘Til Dawn Awareness Week will be held this Monday through Friday to gather support and raise funds for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
“Up ’Til Dawn is a student-led, student-run philanthropic program where college students across the country raise funds for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital,” according to the St. Jude website. Teams are made up of six people, and each person must raise $100 to attend the all night event on Jan. 31 from 12-6 a.m.
A-State students will have a booth set up on the first floor of the Student Union through Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. to spread information about the fundraising and sign participants up for the main Up ‘Til Dawn event to celebrate the money raised.
Last year A-State students raised more than $27,000 for the cause, and the goal for this year is $40,000 and to have 400 participants.
“The number of participants already signed up gives me confidence that we will reach our goal,” Ellen Hakenworth, a sophomore journalism major of Jonesboro and publicity chair for Up ‘Til Dawn, said. “The feedback we have already received from those signed up is inspiring.”
“The goal for this awareness week is to get more students to sign up to be team captains, and to get our student body interested in serving this amazing cause,” Hallie Frederick, a junior chemistry major of Jonesboro and the sponsorship chair for the event, said. “Our executive board is very passionate about supporting St. Jude, so we are striving to get as much participation as we can.”
Hakenworth said she hopes to increase awareness of the great resources that St. Jude provides to families and children suffering from various illnesses.
Hakenworth added social media will play a large role in the fundraising with participants using Twitter and Instagram so the community can see what is being done for St. Jude up until the main event. Once participants are on a team they will have a personal fundraising website to aid in reaching their goal through the use of social media.
Jameson Murrey, a senior advertising major of Jonesboro and executive director for Up ‘Til Dawn, said she expects the awareness week will help spread the word about St. Jude’s, and is aware many students probably don’t know what the event is about.
“I expect it to gain a greater outreach to students,” Murrey said. “I think it will go very well.”
Murrey said Up ‘Til Dawn has been around for about 13 years and the A-State chapter began about five years ago.
“It’s just kind of slowly started emerging through the leadership program since then,” Murrey said.
“We want the event to bring our university together to show how great St. Jude is, and how important this cause is to us,” Frederick said.
