Fowler Feature: Sarah Ring

On February 20, 2014

From a very young age Sarah Ring treasured getting in front of family to sing or dance; she loved performing for others to initiate an emotional response from her audience. This constant passion for theater made her jump at the first opportunity she had to audition for a school play. She always knew the stage was her calling and made it her mission to pursue a career involving it.

“I’m passionate about theater because it defines so much of who I am,” Ring said. “I feel like God gave me the talent and ambition to pursue acting. I’ve never wanted to do anything else.”

Ring chose to attend A-State after attending the Thespian Festival at ASU during her senior year of high school.
“I knew that A-State was the best school in Arkansas for theater. My drama teacher really encouraged me to go to ASU, and I’m super glad I took her advice,” said the junior theatre major of Cabot.

Ring has definitely made her mark in the ASU Theatre Department. In her three years on campus she has been involved in eight productions, including “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” where she played the role of Hermia and the musical “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change.” She played various roles in “Nickel and Dimed”, Gloria in “Boeing Boeing”, Frankie in “The Voice of the Prairie,” the housewife in “Rhinoceros,” Lucy in “Dracula” and the iconic character Sally Brown in the musical “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.”

Ring uses what little extra time she has to participate as a member of Journey Campus church in Jonesboro and the Baptist Collegiate Ministry.

Though she tries to make time for other activities, theater takes up most of her days. She knows the importance of taking advantage of the educational process and absorbs as much information as she can from her professors, each of which uses a different method of directing so they can show students a glimpse of how their future directors may be.

“I’ve had the privilege of being able to work close to each and every one of my professors, whether I was directed by them or worked in the costume shop under them. I have a special attachment to every one of them,” Ring said. “Tim, Lisa, Molly, Claire, Jeff and Bob are spectacular professors and human beings. I call all of them my friends along with being my mentors.”

Ring’s regard for her professors is also a mirror to the potential they see in her. Her freshman year she received the award for “Outstanding New Theatre Student” and her sophomore year she also received “Outstanding Theatre Student” at the annual theatre banquet.
By building a solid foundation at ASU Ring knows she will receive an abundance of opportunities in the future once she graduates. Her goal, of course, is to become a working actress.

“The life of a working actress is never mapped out step by step. It’s full of auditions, callbacks, castings and even the dreaded rejections. Which, I know I will be receiving a lot of those. It really all depends on where the Lord takes me,” she said. “He may keep me in Arkansas my whole life doing community theatre or He might even take me to Broadway or Hollywood or Chicago. It’s all up in the air.”

Ring said her dreams, however, reside in doing both stage and screen acting.

“I would absolutely love to be on Broadway and be in movies,” she said. “That’s the ultimate dream, but I know that as long as I am acting, no matter where I am, I will be happy.”

The ASU Theatre Department’s next production will be “Steel Magnolias,” directed by Molly Simpson, at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 28, March 1, 3, 4, and 5 in the Fowler Center.
