Live now; DJ Swole

On February 13, 2014

Charles McCray, a junior media and communications major of Little Rock, was a part of history when students went on air for Red Wolf Radio on Jan. 27.

“I was in class when the station first launched,” McCray said. “I remember telling my friends to download the A-State app so they could listen to the station.”

His first time on air resulted in some nerves when he opened up the mic. Yet that feeling didn’t last long.

“It feels like a dream come true and it is a great feeling to know that people are listening to every word,” he said.

On air McCray is known as DJ Swole and is responsible for researching the music for language, appropriateness and editing.

“What I do is research the potential music I might play,” he said. “If the song is not radio ready I import the music to Audacity to edit and clean up the music.”

McCray said he is fond of radio and enjoys talking as much as playing music.

“I have always been interested in radio since I was kid,” he said. “When somebody starts playing music I would always try to control the music.”

McCray’s show is filled with ‘90s, current hip hop and R&B music.

He said his biggest lesson coming in to radio was learning to not have a detailed script noting what he had to say, and when and how. McCray advises researching and prepping for a show but to just be natural and adapt as the show goes along. This ease to broadcasting is what keeps him going.

“Every time I open the mic I treat it like it is an audition,” he said. “That’s how you stay hungry, motivated and fresh.”

McCray sees himself still playing music as a DJ for Red Wolf Radio in the future.

“My future plan for RWR is to have live remotes set up for events on campus like real radio stations,” he said. After graduation he wants to be the general manager of a successful radio station.

McCray said RWR will open up doors for the Department of Media, and he sees it growing to include live interviews, sports radio, weather updates and broadcasting live from school events.

“The sky is the limit,” he said.

McCray’s on air times are Mondays and Tuesdays 4-6 p.m., Wednesdays 6-8 p.m., and Fridays 12-2 p.m.
