Taken 2 brings nothing new to genre
The sequel to the dramatic and action packed thriller Taken released in theaters everywhere Oct. 5. The ex-government agent is back to show off his particular set of skills in the sequel, Taken 2. Liam Neeson, with co-stars Famke Janssen and Maggie Grace, has put the whole family in danger when the relatives of the European clan Neeson killed in Taken come for revenge.
In 2008s Taken, directed by Olivier Megaton, it was an exhilarating and fast paced film. Neeson, who played Bryan Mills, went beyond his measures to stop at nothing to rescue his daughter Kim (Grace).
Mills killed more than a dozen Europeans, tortured a sex slave dealer in an electric chair, destroyed European properties, and shot an innocent woman for information. Neeson was nothing but hardcore and fearless.
Maggie Grace was the drugged teenager who was almost sold as a sex slave to the Europeans. In Taken 2, it is her turn to rescue Neeson and Janssen (Kims mother). In this captive turn around, Grace must escape her father so he can kill more Europeans, plus save Janssen.
If I had to rate this movie from one to 10, I would give it a seven. Thats a C ladies and gentlemen.
Now, Neeson didnt completely disappoint. He was still the same nose breaking, raw shooting, action-packed hero he has come to be known for, but thats the problem; the movie was almost the same as the first one.
Why would you bring your family back to the exact same location that your daughter was kidnapped? That doesnt make any sense, does it? Of course not, its like saying, Come get me European family, whom I basically wiped away half of previously.
Sure, the daughter puts on her big girl pants and decides to follow in her fathers footsteps, but she still runs ugly. Whats more important is providing the audience with something unpredictable.
For some reason, Grace doesnt like answering phone calls. In Taken, she missed Neesons phone call. In Taken 2, she missed a total of six.
She nearly missed out on the important news, which couldnt have been said better than from Neeson himself. Kim, your mother and I are going to be taken, Neeson said. Lines like that are priceless, yet predictable.
Although the movie shows repetitive special skilled moves, Neeson still defeats the enemy.
He isnt just physically a man-destroying machine, but the man is intellectual. The way he hears and visualizes things from just looking at a particular setting only one time takes skill. The fighting wasnt as realistic this time around, but Neeson nearly gets defeated. Who has the guts to stand in the ring with the mighty Neeson?
If you love action, this movie will be entertaining. If you pay close attention to detail, you will like it, just not as much as the first one. Taken 2, recycles classic action movies that might leave you wanting half of your money back.
