ASU wins big at Red Wolf Open
Arkansas State Universitys track team hosted the 2012 Red Wolf Open Saturday, competing against Central Arkansas, Harding, University of Arkansas at Little Rock, and Southwest Christian.
ASU head coach Jim Patchell said the meet was among the biggest the team has had in a long time and that they were excited to have their last meet at home.
The team was nervous but in a good way to show off what they can do at home, and Im pleased with how everything went, he said.
The Red Wolves participated in the hammer throw, javelin throw, shot put, discus throw, pole vault, triple jump, long jump, high jump, 4 x 100 meter relay, 4 x 400 meter relay, hurdles, the meter dash, 3,000 meter run, 1,500 meter run and steeplechase.
The Red Wolves opened with a 1-2-3 finish in the womens 3,000 meter run, led by Kristina Aubert, finishing with a time of 10:07.07. Sam Salinas finished in second with a time of 10:23.16, and Rexi Parcells placed third with a time of 10:34.66.
Sharika Nelvis won both events she competed in, including the 100 meter dash and the 100 meter hurdle.
Chris Nicasio placed first in the mens hammer throw with a final throw of 58.62 meters.
Julia Agawu took first in the womens hammer throw with a 56.53-meter toss and was also first in the womens discus throw and shot put.
Going in to todays meet I looked at old records to try to beat them, said Agawu, a junior from Denton, Texas.
Thomas Ligon secured first place in the mens javelin with a throw of 54.51 meters.
Richard Chavez placed first in mens shot put with 16.65 meters.
Solomon Williams placed second in the mens triple jump with a jump of 14.93 meters. He also combined with Charl Stander, Joseph Meyer, and Justin Whitfield to win the mens 4 x 100 meter relay with a time of 41.44 seconds.
William Oliver took first in the mens long jump with an attempt of 7.50 meters.
Chelsea Weaver won the womens 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 11:26.21.
ASU hopes to host more track meets next season.
