Eleventh year for Boyer mile

The Arkansas State Red Wolves womens basketball team began yet another Boyer Mile this past Thursday, Sept. 6 at the ASU track, located adjacent to the Convocation Center.

This preseason conditioning program has not failed in boosting morale and providing a nice running experience for both the players and the community.

This year there was yet another large first-night crowd that came to support the womens basketball team, as well as run the mile. After 11 years, coach Boyer himself has full faith that the Boyer Mile serves a number of different purposes, whether it be helping a community member shed a few unwanted pounds, or giving more motivation to the players themselves. Ever since Ive been here, weve gotten great fan support and it was just a way to encourage our players and try to get more people being active and fit in the community, Boyer said.

Not only does it help as a conditioning program, but it also serves as a way for the players to get to know the fans that come and watch them week in and week out. Quinishia McDowell of Monroe, La, a four-time Boyer Mile participant and a senior guard on the team, likes getting to know the fans and showing her support for them while they run.

My favorite part about the Boyer Mile is getting to know the community, McDowell said. I love the support they give us and just seeing their face makes us [as a team] want to run harder.

While not all participants are required to run the mile, each player on the team has set times they are trying to improve upon each week. Boyer, however, doesnt simply ask everyone participating to run the mile without him running it as well. Carlisha Wyatt, a junior and small forward from Bryan, Texas, likes that Boyer participates just as much as anyone else.

Hes a great coach and he wants the best for everybody. If he can run it, everybody can run it, there are no boundaries, Wyatt said.

Boyer also adds, Im not nearly in the shape that the players are, but if were going to ask the community to come out and participate, Im going to run it as well.

If weather permits, the Boyer Mile will run consecutively for four weeks on every Thursday of the week, ending with a party for all who participated on Sept. 27 after the mile.
