Red Wolves finish eighth at LeTriomphe Initational
The Red Wolves Women’s Golf Team turned in a top 10 performance at the LeTriomphe Invitational in Broussard, La. on Monday.
It had been over three months since the Red Wolves had taken part in an event and though the event was scheduled for two days, bad weather forced invitational officials to call an end to the competition on the second day.
As a team, the Red Wolves finished 8th out of 19 teams, which included a 9th place finish from conference foe South Alabama and a 10th place finish from Central Arkansas. The bad weather not only hurt the course but wreaked havoc on the individual rankings as 83 players finished in a tie.
Despite this confusion the Red Wolves performed well on the individual level as junior Megan Garland from East Yorkshire, England led the Red wolves with an 11th place finish.
She finished the event with a score of 152, just one stroke behind a 4 way tie for 7th place. Other top finishers for the Red Wolves included Maci Arrington, a freshman from Hinton, Okla., who tied for 21st place with a final score of 154. Abi Laker, a sophomore from Oxfordshire, England, had a phenomenal day two and moved from 54th place to 38th.
Among other finishers for the Red Wolves was junior Marie Couffignal of Puymirol, France, who finished in a tie for 53rd, senior Courtney Manning of Auckland, New Zealand who tied for 68th, and senior Clara Tefteller of Paragould who tied for 78th.
Despite these solid scores the golf team has had trouble in events as of late.
After finishing in the top five in their first three events, the Red Wolves took a 10th and 8th place finish in their last two. Laker said the bad weather is definitely to blame and that it has played a negative role on her and her fellow teammates.
“Considering the weather conditions we have had to deal with since being back at school we are pleased with our overall finish. We haven’t been able to practice or play a great deal outside since being back, so we have had to improvise indoors,” Laker said. “As a team I feel we performed well for the circumstances but we know we have a lot more to show during the semester.”
The LeTriomphe Invitational marked midseason in the women’s golf calendar, and the Red Wolves have four events left before the Sun Belt Conference Championship in April. The Red Wolves hit the greens next on Monday, March 3rd at the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island classic at Kiawah Island, S.C.
