Volleyball bound for Sun Belt Tournament
The ASU volleyball team will travel to Bowling Green, Ky. taking the fifth seed in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. It will be ASUs first appearance at the SBC tournament in three years without a SBC West title.
The Red Wolves are starving for a win as they take on the University of Arkansas-Little Rock Trojans. The Trojans enter the tournament as the fourth seed.
ASU will have to find away to enforce defensive pressure as UALR outside hitter Edina Begic is leading the Trojans offensively, scoring a career high 34 kills against Louisiana-Lafayette.
Head coach David Rehr, who hasnt won a post-season game since 2002 said, It being a tournament, three straight matches wins it. But we are not talking to the team about three here, weve been focusing more on the one (UALR).
As the season comes to a close, the Red Wolves will play the biggest games of all. Its a fine line that you walk around this time because you need them the sharpest they can be to play, so we will have about a day and a half of practice before the game, but we wont push them too hard, Rehr said.
The Red Wolves faced the Trojans twice in conference play splitting the winnings this year with the road team winning each match. ASU took the first meeting against UALR in three sets on Oct. 16 in Little Rock.
The Trojans would then retaliate with a 3-2 win in Jonesboro on Oct. 28.
If theres any person or group we need its the trio of Megan Baska, Shelby Crncic and Haley Townsend. We need to match their defense and the intensity, Rehr said.
Rehr finishes his first season with the Red Wolves ranked No.5 going into the tournament. He is confident in the teams ability to perform at a post-season level.
We need this team to play together. It is not about individuals, it is about the team and the team did a really good job of being a team and making it to where we are today, Rehr said.
