Who's who: A-State's new football recruiting class

By Nathan Shelby
On February 5, 2014

Every athlete that decides to join the Pack and spend their college years in Jonesboro is fantastic, and certainly every single one of the 25 new football recruits is going to make an impact for the Red Wolves. With that being said, there are several individuals in this year’s recruiting class that stand out, as Head Coach Blake Anderson has brought in some monsters to help take A-State football to new heights.

Here are some names you need to know:

· A.J. Turner: 6-2, 210, So., LB, Lepanto, Ark (University of Arkansas)

This transfer comes to Arkansas State from the University of Arkansas where he spent most of this season sitting out with an injury. Don’t let that fact fool you though, he started 6 games for the Razorbacks as a true freshman and was named to the 2012 SEC All-Freshman Team. He recorded 53 tackles, which was the fifth highest on the team, including 10 in his first career start against Ole Miss. He was rated as the No. 2 player in Arkansas by 247sports.com in 2011 and was the 33rd ranked outside linebacker in the nation.

· Blaise Taylor: 5-9, 170, Fr., CB, Auburn,?Ala. (Auburn)

The son of new A-State Coach Trooper Taylor did not ride his father’s coat tails to a Red Wolves Commitment, but was a highly sought after defensive back. With offers from SEC schools Tennessee and Auburn, along with Big10 school Nebraska, many believed that Taylor would move on to “greener pastures.” Instead, the Auburn native brings his lengthy list of accolades to Arkansas State. Most notable among these is being tabbed as the No. 110 athlete in the United States by ESPN.

He is a versatile player that could see time on offense, defense, or special teams.

· Terrance “Tank” Hollingsworth: 5-9, 195, Fr., RB, Berry, Ala. (Berry)

If you are going to be excited about any of the players in this recruiting class, be excited about Terrance Hollingsworth. This 4 year starter at Berry High School holds the Alabama High School records for total offense (11,788 yards), all-purpose yards (13, 490) and rushing touchdowns (113). He was just 20 yards shy of adding a state record in rushing yards as well. These numbers place him in the 25 of most all-time yards in a single season for the state of Alabama. Hollingsworth drew interest from Auburn, Boise State, BYU, Iowa, and Miss State.

· Tyler Trosin: 5-11, 180, Jr., WR, Folsom, Calif. (American River (Calif.) college)

Tyler Trosin originally signed with Oregon State in 2011 after taking offers from them, Arizona State, Iowa State, and Washington State. Trosin Redshirted there and then transferred to American River College where he would record 825 yards in 2013, averaging 75 yards a game. What he specializes in though is special teams. In 2013 he returned 550 kickoff return yards and a touchdown on 22 opportunities, averaging 25 yards per return. Add that to 18 punt returns for 382 yards and a touchdown, which averages to 21.2 yards per attempt, and you can see why he earned a first Team All-American nod as a return specialist.

· Chucks Ota: 6-2, 285, Fr., DT, Jonesboro, Ark. (Jonesboro)

Chucks Ota deserves a nod as a highlight of this class, if not for his prowess on the field, but also his role in the recruiting process for Arkansas State. Ota received interest from Yale, Arkansas, Navy, and Ole Miss, with offers from Yale, Ouachita Baptist, and UAB. What is important about Ota though is that he committed to Arkansas State back in June, and then spent the time from then until today convincing many of the other players on this list to come to Arkansas State. The Jonesboro native has exhibited Pack Pride all year long, and will no doubt be an active leader for the Red Wolves in years to come.
