Should Stadium Blvd. be renamed...
Not so fast.

There are many things that I love about Arkansas State University and the name that it has created for itself. However, the current game plan for ASU boltersing that name has me on edge.
Mayor of Jonesboro, Harold Perrin, and Arkansas State University Chancellor Tim Hudson, think a unique way to connect the city of Jonesboro with the university would be to rename Stadium Boulevard to Red Wolf Boulevard. While I have the utmost respect for both of these gentleman, I do not think that this would be a positive idea for the university’s reputation.
There are two main concerns that shouldn’t be overlooked when renaming Stadium Boulevard, public advertising and criminal activity. The first concern centers around ASU’s relationship with businesses on Stadium. ASU should do everything in their power to take into account the costs for renaming the boulevard. Businesses are going to lose money from advertisements, letterhead, business cards, and from location confusion.
It would be an injustice to make them pay burdensome fees for the sole purpose of bringing more ASU pride to a town already full of ASU decorated street windows.
The second concern and cause for my rejection of the name change is potential criminal activity. Property crime and traffic accidents occur on Stadium Boulevard. With a name change, anytime an individual hears about these crimes they will be attached to the name of our university’s mascot.
When attempting to Google ASU Red Wolves, future students, may be hindered by the list of crime related news articles rather than tons of pride filled rhetoric.
Arkansas State University is connected well with Jonesboro already, and this undue name change could bring more hindrance than help. So let’s enjoy the campus for all the positives that it brings, and avoid risks that could threaten our ever growing college community.
